What to check before booking a photoshoot abroad.
Two shoots at the same landmark can differ by a factor of five in price and by forty photos in what you get back. Five things decide which one is right for you.
- 01Count the edited photos, not the minutes.Listings promise anything from fifteen to fifty-five edited images. A forty-minute shoot that delivers thirty-five finished photos beats a two-hour one that sends a gallery of raw files.
- 02Per person or per group. Many shoots are priced for the group, up to two, six or eight people. Split between a couple or a family, a group price is often the cheaper booking.
- 03Book the first slot of the day.The Eiffel Tower, the Trevi Fountain and the lanes of Oia fill up by mid-morning. Sunrise shoots get empty backgrounds and the soft light photographers chase.
- 04Ask when the photos arrive.Delivery runs from the same evening to about a week. If the photos are for a proposal post or a wedding announcement, pick a shoot that promises a date.
- 05Know what is included.Flying dress and kimono shoots supply the outfit, hair and make-up are sometimes extra, and clear kayak shoots mean getting wet. Read the inclusions line before you pack.

Instagram photo tours: the famous spots, with someone to drive and shoot.
A driver who knows the order, a guide who knows the angle, and the gate, the swing or the waterfall you saved before you flew. Bali wrote the format; it now runs from Hanoi to Barcelona.
Paris photoshoots: the Eiffel Tower is the backdrop almost everyone books.
Trocadero at sunrise, the Bir-Hakeim bridge, the Louvre courtyard before it opens. Most Paris shoots are short, priced for two, and over before the first tour buses park.

What a photoshoot costs, from a quick portrait to a dress on the cliffs.
Every shoot on the site priced per person and grouped. Shoots priced for the whole group are left out, so the split here is the per-head reality.
Short landmark portraits, Instagram day tours in Bali and Vietnam, and kimono rentals with photos.
The hour-long private shoot with edited photos, Vespa and Fiat 500 rides, guided photo walks.
Three photoshoots built around something you wear or float in.
Some shoots sell the photographer. These sell the scene: the dress, the kimono, the clear hull over the reef.

The Flying Dress
A long train of light fabric, a photographer, and an assistant just out of frame throwing it into the wind. Santorini made the shoot famous, Cappadocia added hot-air balloons behind it, and Dubai moved it into the dunes. Dresses are supplied, usually in several colours, and sunrise is when the terraces are empty.

Kimono and Hanbok
Dressing takes the first half hour, and a good studio does the hair and the obi for you. Then the walk: Gion lanes in Kyoto, the Asakusa side streets in Tokyo, the palace courts in Seoul in a hanbok. Some bookings are a costume rental with photos; others bring a photographer along the whole route.

The Clear Kayak
A transparent hull on turquoise water, shot from a drone overhead so the kayak seems to float on air. Most shoots last under an hour, include the edited drone stills, and finish with a swim. Expect to get wet, and leave anything you would not dip in the sea on the beach.
